When Gurnard is in season


The red gurnard is instantly recognizable by its striking appearance, which includes large pectoral fins with bright red markings, hence its name. The rest of its body is usually a mottled brown or reddish colour, allowing it to blend in with the sandy and rocky seabeds where it resides.

The red gurnard feeds on bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as crustaceans, using its unique arm-like pectoral fins to stir up the substrate and uncover prey. This diet gives it a characteristic, rich earthy flavour and firm flesh.

While not as well-known as some other fish species, the red gurnard has gained popularity among chefs and seafood enthusiasts, thanks to its distinctive taste and versatility in the kitchen. It can be prepared in various ways, including grilling, frying, and poaching, and its unique flavour profile allows it to pair wonderfully with a range of ingredients and cooking methods.


Each package in your order is labelled with the name of the vessel, or group of vessels, responsible for catching your fish, along with the their home port in Cornwall.

Delivery is free on orders over £50.

Orders placed before 10pm Monday – Wednesday arrive 48 hours after. Orders placed Thursday -Sunday are delivered on Wednesday.

£8.95 postage fee applies on orders under £50 that contain chilled goods.

Click & Collect is available from our Falmouth shop.

You will receive a pick up confirmation email when your order is ready to be collected, which will be same day. 

To help you buy the right amount, we offer the following guidance on portion sizes.

A standard portion size for an adult is 150g to 200g of edible fish.

When you buy fillets, the weight of the fillets is all edible weight.

If you’re buying whole fish you need to account for the weight of bones and parts which aren’t edible.
